Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted in Company C, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Battalion on 23 January 1862 at Adams Run, SC. He was absent sick, in Camp Winder Hospital, Richmond, VA in August 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action at Fox's Gap on 14 September 1862.
