Before the Antietam Campaign:
An unmarried 21 year old farmer from Mt. Gallagher, he enlisted in Company A, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Battalion on 29 December 1861 on Edisto Island, SC.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action at Fox's Gap on 14 September 1862.
