An unmarried 19 year old from the Laurens District, he enlisted in Company E, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Battalion on 2 January 1862 at Columbia, SC.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action at Fox's Gap on 14 September 1862.
