A 21 year old clerk in Boston, he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Company H, 28th Massachusetts Infantry on 8 October 1861 and mustered on 3 January 1862. He was wounded on James Island, SC on 16 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
