Before Sharpsburg

He mustered as 3rd Sergeant in Company H, First Texas Infantry on 24 June 1861 in New Orleans. He was reduced to Private, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was severely wounded in both thighs and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was probably treated at a field hospital near Sharpsburg and was in a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD on 10-11 October 1862. He was then sent on to Baltimore and later paroled, date not known. He was wounded again, in the arm at Gettysburg on 2 July 1863 and captured at Cashtown, PA on 5 July. He was held at Point Lookout, MD and exchanged there on 6 March 1864.

He married Elizabeth Ann Pettypool (or Pettipool, 1853-1923) in 1869 when she was 15 years old and they had 7 children together between 1871 and 1891.
