Age 27 years, he enlisted 26 October 1861 at Brocketts Bridge, and mustered in as Sergeant, Company D, 97th New York Infantry on 6 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the leg action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at the Smoketown Hospital at Sharpsburg, MD, and his left leg was amputated. He was discharged for disability at Smoketown on 8 December 1862.
