Before Antietam

Son of a Scotlish-born furnace manager, in 1860 he was a 22 year old laborer living with his father and 4 younger siblings at Indiana Furnace in Vermillion County, IN. He enlisted and mustered in Terra Haute, IN on 7 June 1861 as a Private in Company I, 14th Indiana Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the hand in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted Corporal, date not given, and was killed in action at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863.
