Before Antietam

Age 24 years, he enrolled 9 September 1861 at Canton to serve three years, and mustered in as Corporal, Company A, 60th New York Infantry on 30 October.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in both knees action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at the Smoketown Hospital, Sharpsburg. He was promoted Sergeant on 1 November 1862. He re-enlisted 14 December 1863 and was promoted First Sergeant 25 December. He mustered in as First lieutenant 19 January 1864 and as Captain, Company G on 23 January 1865. He mustered out with his Company 17 July 1865 at Alexandria, VA.
