Age 21, he enlisted on 23 April 1861 in New York City, and mustered as Private, Company I, 4th New York Infantry on 9 May. He transferred to Company G on 1 November and was promoted to Sergeant on 1 January 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
