He enlisted at age 19 in Company D, 13th New Jersey Infantry on 21 July 1862 and mustered as Private.

On the Campaign

He was in action with his Company at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

Shortly after the battle he was ill in hospitals in Frederick, MD then Baltimore. He transferred to the Invalid (Veteran Reserve) Corps 16 December 1862, and was discharged 3 July 1863.
