Age 19, he enlisted in Company L, First Texas Infantry on 11 April 1862 in Galveston.

On the Campaign

He was severely wounded in the neck and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was exchanged in November 1862. He was left behind with the wounded and captured at Gettysburg, PA on 5 July 1863 and exchanged in March 1864.
