He was 39 years old when he enrolled 1 January 1862 at Albany, NY as Lieuteant Colonel (commissioned 3 February) in the 93rd New York Infantry.

In the Antietam Campaign:
In command of the 93rd New York Infantry, part of the Headquarters Guard, Army of the Potomac.

The remainder of the War:
He was wounded in action 2 October 1864 at Poplar Springs Church, VA. Mustered out 2 February 1865 at Petersburg, VA.
