He served as Private, Company D, First Maine Infantry for 3 months’ service from 3 May to 5 August 1861. From 7 August to 7 June 1862 he served in Company F, 7th Maine Infantry. Then age 21, from Portland, he enlisted in Company C, 10th Maine Infantry on 3 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He transferred to Company F, 29th Maine Infantry on 31 May 1864, was promoted Corporal in 1865, and was discharged 31 May 1865.
