Before Antietam

A 28 year old farmer in Washington, IN, he mustered as Corporal, Company E, 27th Indiana Infantry on 12 September 1861. He was promoted to Sergeant on 3 January 1862, and to First Sergeant on 21 March.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was detached on recruiting duty in Indianapolis from 21 November 1863 to 30 March 1864, when he was commissioned First Lieutenant and returned to his unit. He transferred to Company A, 70th Indiana Infantry (after the muster out of the 27th) on 4 November 1864 in Atlanta, GA, and mustered out with them on 8 June 1865 in Washington, DC.
