Before Sharpsburg

From Darlington, SC, he became a volunteer aide to his brother General Evander Law in the summer of 1862.

On the Campaign

From General Law's Sharpsburg Report:

The members of my staff-Lieutenant Terrell, assistant adjutant-general, Captain Kirkman, Lieutenant Law, of the Citadel Academy, and Private Smith, Fourth Alabama-as usual, performed every duty bravely and efficiently.
He was wounded in the left ankle inn action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was commissioned Lieutenant and Enrolling Officer in South Carolina 1 October 1863.

After the War

He moved to Solano County, CA, in 1869. He was a school teacher there and in Mariposa County. He was later a lawyer and district attorney in Merced.
