Age 27, he enlisted in Company B, 20th New York Infantry on 3 May 1861 in New York City. He as promoted to Corporal on 11 July 1861.

He was in Maryland with his Company.

The rest of the War

He died, probably of disease, at a hospital in Hagerstown, MD on 30 October 1862. He was initially buried in a plot near the Alms House in Hagerstown.
