Before Antietam

An 18 year old farmer in Lawrence County, he mustered as Private, Company D, 27th Indiana Infantry on 15 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the knee in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated in a hospital in Washington, DC and returned to duty on 11 December 1862. He was promoted to Corporal 7 March 1863. He was wounded again, in the right hip in action at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863. He was discharged for wounds from the Lock Street Hospital, Cincinnati, OH on 21 November 1863.
