Before Sharpsburg

A 16 year old farmhand in Augusta County, he mustered as Private, Company G, 52nd Virginia Infantry on 2 August 1861 in Staunton, VA. He reenlisted on 1 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the thigh and knee and was captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He returned to duty in October 1862. He was captured in action at Piedmont, VA on 5 June 1864 and was held at Camp Morton, IN. He was transferred to City Point, VA for exchange on 4 March 1865 and paroled at Staunton, VA on 1 May 1865.
