A 24 year old laborer in Flippo's Store, Caroline County, he enlisted in the Confederate States Navy in May 1861. He was discharged to enlist in the infantry in January 1862, and he mustered as Private, Company G, 30th Virginia Infantry on 11 February 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
