Before Sharpsburg

Age 24, from Alexandria, he mustered as Private, Company I, 17th Virginia Infantry on 25 April 1861. He was appointed First sergeant later in the year. He was captured in action at Frazier's Farm, VA on 30 June 1862 and held at Fort Columbus, NY and Fort Warren, Boston, MA until exchanged about 31 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
