From Washington County, he mustered as Private, Company A, 37th Virginia Infantry on 26 March 1861 in Goodson (now Bristol), VA. He was sick in Staunton, VA in March 1862 and furloughed for illness in May, but returned to duty in August 1862.

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
