He mustered as Private, Company D, 9th Virginia Infantry Battalion on 18 May 1861 in Hunterville. On 1 May 1862 he transferred to Company I, 25th Virginia Infantry. He was captured at Cedar Mountain, VA in 9 August 1862, paroled on 1 September, and exchanged to return to duty on 12 September 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
