From Pittsylvania County, he mustered as Private, Company I, 53rd Virginia Infantry on 21 March 1862 at Suffolk, VA. He was ill in hospital in Suffolk in May 1862 and detailed as camp guard in July.

On the Campaign

He was killed by explosion of a shell in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
