Age 37, from Perquimans County, he mustered as Corporal, Company A, First North Carolina Infantry on 18 May 1861 in Chowan County. He was promoted to Sergeant on 1 April 1862 and wounded in action at Ellerson's Mill, VA on 26 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
