Before Sharpsburg

Age 23, from Wayne County, he enlisted as 4th Sergeant in Captain Junius B Whitaker's Company, 9th Regiment North Carolina Volunteers on 15 April 1861 in Goldsboro. The Company transferred to become "D" of the 4th North Carolina Infantry on 28 June 1861 when they mustered for Confederate service. He was promoted to 3rd Sergeant on 21 October and commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 24 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

His mother Margaret Anderson filed a claim for his final pay in November 1864.
