A 27 year old ditcher in Duplin County, he mustered as Private, Company E, 20th North Carolina Infantry on 3 May 1861 in Duplin County. He transferred to Company A on 15 March 1862 and was wounded in action at Gaines' Mill, VA on 27 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.
