Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted in Robertson County as a Private in Company C, 4th Texas Infantry on 15 July 1861.

On the Campaign

He was with his Company in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and was wounded in the right arm in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

His right arm was amputated and he was furloughed on 15 October 1862. He was retired by a medical board at Bristol, TN in April 1864 and served afterward in the Invalid Corps, Provisional Army of the Confederate States (PACS). He was in Atlanta, GA when he got paid $132 for the previous 12 months on 4 May 1864.

After the War

In 1880 he was a farmer in Robertson County, TX. He was Sheriff of Robertson County for one term, date not known. By 1900 he had retired and was living with his daughter Irene's family in the town of Hearne (probably named for his wife's family).

Personal details from family genealogists and the US Census for 1850, 1880, and 1900. His birth year varies from 1837 to 1843, and birth place is either Alabama or Mississippi. His gravesite is on Findagrave.

He was one of 3 Barton brothers in Company C of the 4th Infantry. His brother John also lost his right arm at Sharpsburg. Francis Davis "Frank" Barton (1844-1900) was wounded at Gaines' Mill ('62) and Chickamauga, GA ('63).

He married Mary Hearne (1842-1879) in 1865 and they had 3 children between 1866 and 1872.
