Before the Antietam Campaign:
Begining October 15, 1861 he was Captain, Company D.

In the Antietam Campaign:
Assumed command of the 56th Pennsylvania Infantry when LCol Hofmann took over the Brigade (2nd Brigade of the 1st Division, I Corps) on September 14.

On the 17th at Antietam, the Brigade was held in reserve north of the Poffenberger farm to protect Hooker's I Corps artillery.

The remainder of the War:
He resigned his commission March 25, 1863.
