Before the Antietam Campaign:
Was a printer and newspaper man, and a member of Company D, Buffalo City Guard, from 1846.

In the Antietam Campaign:
In command of the 21st New York Infantry, part of the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Division, I Corps. His Brigade advanced along the West side of the Hagerstown Pike early on the 17th in close support of BGen Gibbon's 4th 'Black Hat' Brigade.

After the War:
Mustered out in 1863, he was elected mayor of Buffalo, N.Y., 1868-69; U.S. Representative from New York 32nd District, 1883-85. Died in Buffalo, Erie County, N.Y., December 16, 1899. Interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Buffalo, N.Y.
