Before Sharpsburg

Age 22, he enlisted at Camp Clark in Guadalupe County as a Private in Company D, 4th Texas Infantry on 4 July 1861 and was appointed First Corporal on 20 November 1861. He was promoted to 4th Sergeant by August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was in action with his Company at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and was captured at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was at Fort Delaware then sent to Aiken's Landing, VA for exchange on 2 October. By then 2nd Sergeant, he was declared exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was appointed First Sergeant of his Company by January 1864 and was surrendered and paroled with them at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
