Before Antietam
He mustered, at age 33, as Captain, Co. K of the 23rd Infantry on 6 May 1861 at Elmira. He was appointed Colonel of the Regiment on 16 May.
On the Campaign
In command of the 23rd New York Infantry, part of the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Division, I Corps. His Brigade advanced along the West side of the Hagerstown Pike early on the 17th in close support of Brigadier General Gibbon's 4th 'Black Hat' Brigade.
The rest of the War
He remained in command of the Regiment through Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. He mustered out of service with the Regiment on 23 May 1863. He was honored by brevet to Brigadier General of Volunteers in March 1865 for his service.
After the War
He held elected office as a member of the NY State Assembly from Chemung County in 1869, 1880, and 1881. He committed apparently premeditated suicide in 1883.
