In the Antietam Campaign:
In command of the 80th New York Infantry (20th Militia), part of the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Division, I Corps. His Brigade advanced along the West side of the Hagerstown Pike early on the 17th in close support of BGen Gibbon's 4th 'Black Hat' Brigade.
