References & notes
Basic information from the Alabama Archives,1 which has him as G.N. Lewis, Sr. Thanks to Marian Crenshaw Austin for the pointer to Private Lewis and details about him, and for his picture from a very faded copy of a photograph.
His first cousin, also named George Nolan Lewis, was in the same Company. That George was not at Sharpsburg, but was badly wounded at Gettysburg, wounded and captured in the Wilderness, VA on 6 May 1864, and died while a prisoner in Elmira, NY on 6 February 1865.
