References & notes

Service information from Simpson,1 who says he was held at a Federal prison in St. Louis, MO. There is a Stephen Hempstead, age 22, listed as an inmate in the Gratiot Street Prison, St. Louis, a resident of and captured in Callaway County, MO in August 1863. His rank was "citizen". It's not clear that this is the same man. Hempsteads were early pioneers in that part of Missouri.
