Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted at Lyons in Burleson County as a Private in Company F, 4th Texas Infantry on 14 March 1862.

On the Campaign

He was with his Company in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to 4th Corporal on 22 November 1862 and to 2nd Corporal on 20 May 1863. He was wounded by a gunshot to his right shoulder at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863 and captured there on 5 July. The head of his upper arm bone was removed (surgical resection) and he was treated at the Letterman US Army General Hospital on the field into August. He was transferred on 14 September to the USA GH in West's Buildings in Baltimore and was paroled there on 25th and sent to City Point, VA for exchange. He was admitted to the Texas Hospital in Richmond, VA on the 28th and furloughed to Scottsville, VA for 60 days on 14 October. He was afterward in Howard's Grove GH, Richmond, until furloughed home to Texas on 11 December 1863.
