Before the Antietam Campaign:
He is listed in the 1860 Grimes County census living in Anderson P.O.; age 21; born TX; postmaster; son of Margaret M. Barry. He enlisted 19 July 1861 at Harrisburg, Texas as Private in Company G, 4th Texas Infantry. He was wounded in the arm in action at Gaines' Mill 27 June 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Confined at Ft. Delaware. Exchanged 10 November 1862. Elected 3rd Lieutenant 7 March 1864. Wounded in the arm at the Wilderness 6 May 1864. Retired for disability 28 November 1864.
