From Edgecombe County, he enlisted as Private in Battery A (later Manly's), First North Carolina Light Artillery on 1 March 1862. He may have had prior service in Battery G, 3rd NC Artillery (40th Regiment State Troops).

On the Campaign

He was in killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
