Before Sharpsburg

Age 18, from Iredell County, he enlisted as a Private in Company H, 4th North Carolina Infantry on 1 March 1862 in Iredell County. He was promoted to Sergeant, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was held at Fort Delaware and sent to sent to Aiken's Landing, VA on 2 October and exchanged there on 10 November 1862. He was First (Orderly) Sergeant and at least briefly in command of his Company by December 1862. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant to date from 16 April 1863, but was killed at Gettysburg, PA on 1 July 1863. He was buried on the field.

After the War

His father Joseph filed a claim for his final pay in November 1863.
