In 1860 he was a 19 year old farmer on his widowed mother's place in Iredell County, NC. He enlisted as a Private in Company C, 4th North Carolina Infantry on 14 (or 26) February 1862 at Statesville.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

His mother Nancy applied for his final pay and allowances of $172.23 in June 1863.
