Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Orford, NH, he enlisted as 1st Lieutenant (age 32) on 16 August 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
In command of First Battery, New Hampshire Light Artillery, part of the 1st Division of I Corps' Artillery. He had assumed command after 2nd Bull Run (29 Aug), where Capt Gerrish was wounded and captured.

The remainder of the War:
He was later Captain of the battery.
