Before Antietam

He enlisted at about 17 years old during the Mexican War period (1846-48) as a Private in Captain Weightman's Company A, Missouri Light Artillery Battalion. The battery served in Kansas, New Mexico, and Louisiana, and he mustered out with them in New Orleans in June 1847. By 1860 he was a tinsmith in Manchester, NH.

In 1861, by then age 32, he helped raise the First Independent Battery, New Hampshire Light Artillery:

The State of New Hampshire furnished only one light battery during the war of the Rebellion, which was recruited entirely in Manchester by Frederick M. Edgell and Edwin H. Hobbs, in the autumn of 1861. It was mustered into the service of the United States on the 26th of September, 1861
He was commissioned its First Lieutenant on 16 August 1861.

On the Campaign

He was in command of his battery as part of the 1st Division of I Corps' Artillery. He had assumed command after 2nd Bull Run (29 August 1862), where Captain Gerrish was wounded and captured.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Captain of the Battery on 8 March 1863. He was commissioned Major of the First New Hampshire Heavy Artillery on 10 November 1864, and his old Battery was attached to his new command as Company M, though continuing to operate as light artillery. He mustered out of service on 15 June 1865
