He enlisted and mustered as Private, Company E, 37th Virginia Infantry in Rose Hill, VA on 22 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was captured at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863 and held at Fort Delaware. He was transferred to Point Lookout, MD on 26 October 1863 and sent to the camp hospital there on on 7 December 1863. He died of disease on 12 March 1864.
