Before Sharpsburg

An immigrant from Hessen-Darnstadt, he was a 19 year old peddler in Dalton, GA in 1860. He enlisted as Private, Company B, Phillips' Legion Infantry Battalion on 8 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded and captured in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was exchanged on 17 October 1862 and returned to duty. He was captured at Knoxville, TN on 3 December 1863 and held at Rock Island, IL. He was released on 21 May 1865.
