He enlisted as Private, Company F, Phillips' Legion Infantry Battalion on 1 August 1861. He was listed as under arrest in June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was captured at Frederick, MD on 12 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was exchanged 2 October 1862 but listed as absent without leave from November 1862 through February 1863. He was captured at Knoxville, TN on 29 November 1863 and held at the Federal prison in Rock Island, IL. He took an oath of allegiance and enlisted in Company I, 2nd US Volunteer Infantry on 13 October 1864 and served in the west. He mustered out at Ft. Leavenworth, KS on 7 November 1865.
