He enlisted in Washington County, TX as a Private in Company H, 4th Texas Infantry on 7 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He was in action with his Company at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September, but not at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was listed as a deserter on 15 July 1864.

J. W. Lemon left Company H at Petersburg, but afterward wrote Captain Hunter that he had joined a Virginia cavalry company.
