Before Sharpsburg

From York County, he had served in the Turkey Creek Minute Men militia Company in 1860. In January 1861 he enlisted in the Jasper Light Infantry (Captain Micah Jenkins), which mustered on 13 April 1861 as Company I, 5th South Carolina Infantry. He went to Company E in the reorganization of 1862. He was captured at Seven Pines, VA on 31 May 1862, held at Fort Delaware, then exchanged at Aiken's Landing, VA on 5 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
