An unmarried 39 year old painter in New Orleans, he enlisted as Sergeant in Company B, 5th Louisiana Infantry on 4 June 1861 at Camp Moore, LA.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the leg in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was in hospitals in Staunton, Lynchburg and Charlottesville, VA to August 1864 and lost his right leg below the knee.
