Before Antietam

After medical school he practiced in Chesterville (1843-51) and Mt Gilead (1851-61) in Ohio. He was commissioned Captain, Company E, 26th Ohio Infantry on 14 June 1861, but was transferred and commissioned Major of 32nd Ohio Infantry on 26 July 1861.

On the Campaign

He commanded the regiment as senior officer at Harpers Ferry - Colonel Ford had Brigade command there. He was captured there along with his entire command on 15 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was paroled and sent to Chicago to wait for exchange. He resigned his commission on 13 January 1863. He was commissioned Surgeon of the 136th Ohio Infantry - a 100 day unit - on 13 May 1864 and served in hospitals in Washington, DC until mustering out with the regiment at Camp Chase, OH on 31 August 1864.

After the War

He resumed his practice, first in Newton, OH, then, from 1872 to 1905, in Cincinnati.
