Age 23, he enlisted on 1 May 1861 at Gouverneur for two years and mustered as Private, Company D, 16th New York Infantry on 15 May. He was promoted to Corporal on 16 October 1861.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died "in a hospital near the battle ground" on 7 October 1862.
