Age 19, he enlisted on 9 May 1861 in Buffalo and mustered as Private, Company E, 21st New York Infantry on 20 May.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in the abdomen or chest in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at the field hospital on the Hoffman farm near Sharpsburg and was probably sent to a US Army hospital in Washington DC, but died there of wounds on 14 October 1862.
