From Armstrong County, he enlisted and mustered on 1 May 1861 as Private, Company A, 9th Pennsylvania Reserves.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862 and probably died the next day.
